ドナルド・フェイゲ（ガ？）ン（Donald Fagen公式サイト）は1948年1月ニュージャージー州生まれ。日本流に言うと一学年上ですが、早生まれの子歳仲間ということになります。
1972年フェイゲンはウォルター・ベッカー（Walter Becker公式サイト/）と共にSteely Dan(Steely Dan公式サイト)を結成します。
ドナルド・フェイゲンはSteely Dan5枚目のアルバム「Royal Scam」で知りました。
バンド名はドナルドに由来するのかと思ったら、そんなダサい感じではなく、ウィリアム・S・バロウズの小説「裸のランチ」に登場する男性器の張型「Steely Dan III from Yokohama」に由来するとのこと。って大胆な発想・・・
「都会的」「ジャズっぽい」「クール」な感じで、ぐいぐい引き込まれて感じですっかり虜になって、Steely DanのCDを揃えました。
アメリカのCD屋で廃盤になって、プラスティックケースに切り傷を入れたSteely Danを数枚見つけてレジに持って行くとUh! Lots of Steely Dan!って・・・冷やかされて。
でも、自分の中では「Royal Scam」を超えるものはなく、意気込みが薄れかけてきた時に、ドナルド・フェイゲンのソロアルバムを発見。
やっぱりいいなと・・・3枚のソロアルバムを入手しました。
これからもソロアルバムを追って行くことになりそうです。

※『Royal Scan』の曲”Kid Charlemagne”の動画は軒並み削除されていて、Steely Danのまともな演奏はこの動画くらいしかなさそうです。
カラオケ版に素人が吹き込んだと思われる動画が平気でアップされていて、イントロ聴くとCDと同じなのにボーカル入るとぐっと迫力が下がる。聴き直してみて、これはフェイクだと確信。あやうく載せてしまうところでした。
権利上の問題が生じて削除されたのかも知れません。ということは、この動画も長いことはないかも知れません。
※2019年にBlue Noteに来るということでチケットを購入したのですが、病気で来日できず、生で聴くことができませんでした。再度のチャンスがあるのだろうか？
